HOW TO SUSTAINABLY GROW, PIVOT OR CHANGE CAREERS

Get the growth without the grind

It took me about 3 years to figure out what I wanted to change, and then only about 1 year to make those changes. My personal and professionnal growth over the last 18 months (at the time of writing) has been exponential, but here are a few tips I learned along the way to make a bumpy road smoother because when you are navigating mid-life career pivots, growth is inevitable, but not always comfortable.

As you refine your goals, shift mindsets, and embark on new professional paths, the process can feel daunting. On top of that, you are likely learning new skills, taking on new roles and creating new habits and routines, and that is a lot of NEW to manage.

Here are some strategies to make this transition easier so that you can move into this new phase of life infused with vigor and resilience

  1. Take Small Steps

Transitioning careers mid-life can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be rushed. Instead of pressuring yourself with rapid change, get into the mindset of gradual improvement. Allocate small, consistent amounts of time to your career pivot endeavors. Whether it's dedicating moments each day to learning a new skill, attending networking events, or exploring potential industries, taking deliberate steps at your own pace lays a foundation for sustainable growth.

You may need to keep your current job or career because you have to, or maybe because you want to. I know that it can sometimes feel overwhelming to be managing two businesses / jobs at once. As a multi-passionate person, I love my work in beauty and am not totally giving it up just yet, but juggling the 2 worlds can be hard.

So the key takeaway is to pace yourself. it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Make realistic goals of what can be accomplished in the time you have, not the time you wish you had.

2. Pay it Forward

Giving back during your career pivot can be immensely rewarding. Consider sharing your experience, time, or resources with others in your field of expertise. This can be in the field you are moving away from moving towards, or both! It may seem counterintuitive, but the reward of giving of yourself can actually help fuel up your energy tank. Mentorship, volunteering, or collaborating on projects not only benefits those you assist but also reignites your sense of purpose. By contributing to the growth of others, you reinforce your journey and find renewed inspiration through empowering fellow women navigating similar transitions.

Maybe it is simply sharing some tips on social media, maybe you can start a study group in your new career path, or simply offer a helping hand to someone you know is struggling. By finding all the ways to be helpful, we can stay in tune with all the good and positive aspects of our talents.

3. Get a support system

Find your net! What has helped me the most was the people I shared and engaged with on my path of pivoting. From classmates to my coach, as well as new friendship groups with new shared interests, having a cheerleader (or several) on your side helps when you are setting up something new.

Surround yourself with a community that understands and uplifts you during your career pivot. Seek out groups, forums, or networking circles specifically tailored to mid-life career changers or women in transition. Having a supportive network provides invaluable encouragement, advice, and solidarity during challenging times. Groups are really helpful to make you feel more connected and less alone. Specific coaching or development groups will help you develop yourself and your new venture faster.

For more individual support, look to a colleague, mentor or coach to keep yu on track and moving through the more challenging parts of the process. Having someone dedicated to supporting you through this process is key to staying on track and allows you to move further, faster.

Navigating a mid-life career pivot as a woman requires a blend of patience, generosity, and community support. By incorporating these strategies into your journey, you can cultivate a resilient and fulfilling path forward.

Remember, your growth is not only about professional advancement but also personal evolution, and growth can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but that is just you growing and stretching into what is possible for you. Share your experiences and insights with others, and don't hesitate to seek guidance and support along the way.
